Asthma

Asthma is the leading chronic illness among children and adolescents in the United States.  Our goal at Highland Park ISD is to keep your student safe while at school.  The Asthma Action plan is in accordance with Texas Education Code 38.015.  This bill allows students to self-administer asthma medication(s) with prescription label attached while at school and/or school functions with permission from parents and physicians. Please have your child's physician complete the required Asthma Action plan and return to your school nurse.

We keep a small amount of asthma medication(s) in our clinics for emergency use to provide quick relief of asthma symptoms.  These medications are stocked for emergency use only.   If a student requires the use of emergency medications more than twice in one week for shortness of breath, this is a sign of poorly controlled asthma. Please follow up with your child's physician to see if adjustments need to be made in their prescribed treatment(s).

If a student carries their inhaler, parents are encouraged to bring an extra inhaler to store in the clinic, in case the student forgets their inhaler at home.
