Progress Reports 2016-17
May 19, 2017
The school is still on schedule to open at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year. Most of the mechanical and plumbing work is complete and air conditioning will be functional in the next two weeks. Interior walls are being installed, textured and painted. Kitchen equipment is being installed and the permanent roof has been completed. Stonework and brickwork continues with many areas complete. A street resurfacing project has been completed and work on a sidewalk on Durham from the school south to Caruth has begun.

University Park Elementary School Rebuild
Friday, May 19 is the last day of school for University Park Elementary School in its current building. Wednesday's send-off celebration for the school was attended by many former students and teachers. Teachers will pack up and move their items out on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
An online auction for items from the school brought in more than $66,000 to the district. Those who bid the highest on particular items will be able to pick them up next week. Following the removal of asbestos, the school will be torn down starting in mid-June to make way for the new one, which will feature more classroom space, more play space for students, flexible learning spaces, underground parking and a more attractive entry off of Amherst to the north.
Armstrong Elementary Renovation
With input from Construction Manager Balfour Beatty, the project schedule has been revised so that construction will begin in late December 2017. The overall completion schedule (which includes the renovation work) will not be affected, and the new start date is expected to result in better pricing on the project.
Bradfield Elementary
A legacy committee has begun work on identifying certain items from the school that will be important to maintain its rich tradition. Architects have started work on preliminary designs following meetings with neighbors, the Bradfield legacy committee and the district's Design and Construction committee.
Renovations and Additions at MIS/HPMS
This project is on schedule to issue for bidding this month, following approval by the City Council earlier this week. The Highland Park Town Council will not hear this case until June.
Renovations and Additions at Highland Park High School
The project is on schedule to issue documents for bidding and construction in June 2017. The conceptual master plan of the HPHS site has been submitted to the city of UP. Zoning for new parking lots and a temporary playfield near the district's administration have been approved by the UP City Council.
Seay Tennis Center new building
Once a final building permit is approved, work should begin on the site. Construction mobilization is anticipated to begin as soon as the permit is approved.
Once construction begins, there will be no access to the HPHS Parking Garage and HPISD Outdoor Tennis Center via Glenwick Lane. While construction continues for the foreseeable future, access to the HPHS Parking Garage will only be available via Westchester Drive.
Renderings of the Multi-Use BuildingThe district's Design and Construction Committee reviewed plans for the multi-use building this week. A few of the renderings are below. In addition, the architect continues to work on relocating the proposed Training Room into the existing Baseball Locker Room Building. The project has been rescheduled to stay in sequence with the construction completion date for the new Seay Center.
Hyer Elementary
Although the project schedule does not start until summer of 2018, a legacy committee will be formed during the next few months to begin taking an inventory of items to be kept while Hyer is under construction.
Highlander Stadium Renovations
Work is not scheduled to start until January 2018.

The following is a status report of where several projects stand as of early-April:
Construction on the new elementary school near Northway Christian Church
The new school continues to take shape and remains on schedule to open in August. Bricks are being laid, roofing is being installed and interior wall partitions are being set in place. Construction on a sidewalk along the west side of Durham to the school will be completed in time for the beginning of the school year in August.
University Park Elementary School Rebuilding Project
The design of the new campus has been approved by the University Park City Council. Plans for the underground parking garage, which will enter from the south from Lovers Lane, has been expanded to provide 85 spaces. The school is on target to begin construction this summer. A legacy committee has identified various items at the current school that will be kept and eventually moved into the new school upon completion.
Armstrong Elementary School Renovation
Plans for the renovations are nearly complete. Construction is planned to begin in late-summer 2017.
Bradfield Elementary School Rebuilding Project
Work on the schematic design for the school will begin this summer. A legacy committee is being formed to review items at the school that should be kept and moved to the new school upon completion.
Renovations/Additions at MIS/HPMS
Plans for additions to the middle school have been finalized and will require approval from both the City of UP and Town of HP. If approved, construction will begin in the fall.
Renovations/Additions at Highland Park High School
The new Seay Tennis Center, to be located east of the high school parking garage, will begin construction later this spring. This project will eventually allow a new multi-use building, to include a natatorium, to be built on the site of the existing tennis facility. Construction on the additional classrooms on the northwest corner of the high school (just north of the band hall) is scheduled to begin summer 2017.

The following is an update on what has taken place throughout the district:New Elementary School
The school is still projected to be completed in time for the 2017-18 school year. As of Friday, March 3:
- The first floor garage deck is completed. Plumbing and lighting conduit is being installed in the garage. Masonry work for the gym is complete, moisture barrier has been installed (the bright teal color) and stonework has started. Area C interior walls are being installed.
- All floors for Area A have been poured. HVAC duct and electrical conduit is almost complete on the first floor, and is being installed on the second and third floor. HVAC unit screening is installed on the roof deck. Roofing installation work has begun
- In Area B, all steel is in place and all floors have been poured.
- Windows frames are being installed in Areas A and C.
The public can monitor progress at any time online with the camera that has been placed at the location. Still photos and time-lapse photography of the project are available.
University Park Elementary Rebuild
- Design Development documents have been completed, and the contractor, Balfour Beatty, is working collaboratively with the architect to refine the estimates. The parking garage design has been expanded to accommodate all staff from the school.
- The design submittal was approved during the City of UP Planning and Zoning meeting, and is now scheduled for a hearing before the UP City Council on March 21.
- The construction drawings are scheduled to be completed and ready for bidding in early April 2017.

Progress continues to be made on new facilities in Highland Park ISD. Much of the foundation for the new elementary school near Northwest Highway has been poured and the steel frame for all floors is being installed. In addition, the contractor has started work on installing a larger storm sewer to resolve water run-off issues in the neighborhood.

Plans for the new University Park Elementary School are taking shape. The new design will incorporate some of the school's existing features (including the frontispiece surrounding the current front door) and provide significantly more active green space for students and the community. All classrooms and common areas, such as the cafeteria and gymnasium, will be larger, there will be underground parking for staff and the school's exterior facing Amherst will be a vast improvement over what is there currently.

Ground has been broken and demolition has begun at the site of Highland Park ISD's first new elementary school since 1948. That and other projects are beginning to take shape as part of HPISD's $361.4 million bond election approved by voters in November 2015.
Here's an update on progress:
The HPISD School Board, Superintendent Dr. Tom Trigg and Dallas City Council Member Jennifer S. Gates officially broke ground June 20 on the first new elementary school in HPISD since 1948.
New elementary school Highland Park ISD officially broke ground June 20 on a new elementary school designed to serve students for generations to come. Approximately 200 community members gathered at the site of the new school, on the corner of Wentwood and Durham, to celebrate as construction begins on the state-of-the-art facility for HPISD students. After the groundbreaking ceremony, Balfour Beatty Construction began clearing the site to prepare for construction. The firm has installed a screening fence and will use the north part of the site to stage and enter the property. Every effort, within reason, will be made to limit parking on residential streets during the construction stage of the building. In addition, a 24-hour hotline has been established for neighbors to be able to report concerns related to construction. (Click below to see the construction plan for the site.)
