A virtual meeting was held Oct. 26, 2021 for MIS/HPMS parents of students with dyslexia. The meeting was recorded as a resource for parents.

once again I can't see you guys it looks good we can see you there okay guys hi I am making Mitchell I am the hpms dyslexia therapist and I also sometimes work with the Mis students when we have an overflow and today we're going to be talking to you guys about at home learning Lexia with are intermediate and middle school-aged students so just start we're going to start off with talking about reading at home so I know we probably hit this button the lot but reading 20 minutes a day really does affect your stew and it really changes not only their increase the popularity but their outlook on reading in general so I'm getting your students to read for 15 to 20 minutes if they can really impact there reading at school and it can even be with audiobook supports I do recommend falling longer using their Learning Ally accounts and next thing can you hear me hear me oh yeah this is just important first wife thanks to show kids just how important books are Simonton model that at home we have some great libraries here in our community we got the upe library the hplibrary that are easy and they made those areas really spend for children in elementary kids middle schoolers and and visiting the library often is a really great Habit to get into and just demonstrate again for you know our children that that's something that could be fun and visiting at Austin and visiting at we play half-price bookstores a great place to get some books in a Barnes & Noble make it an outing couple of his lunch or ice cream something fun and of course helping kiddos find book set Pinterest I think that's the number one thing of kids that struggle or seem to have demonstrated interest if we can just you know happened to the passion or hobby or something like that find a book and it's really a game changer salmon also like to have your kids catch you reading yourself that's a really good thing to do yeah I just want to talk on the phone I think I always Park challenges is motivating students and trying to find that people get tools out their Destinies cover and again will post this with all these links were you on it to the district website but that is our own Raider library card catalog and it's a terrific way about what into reading it's a great tool for discovering new books and not like I'm also a big fan of the Scholastic book Wizard this is a tool where you can type in things like right level interest genre and it will start spitting out some allow that you might not have seen before of course it's the last tell you a book but it's still a really really great to rule for a trying to find some interesting reading material a lot of time to talk about the strategies of finding a book it might be something like what did you read before that you enjoyed, think about something similar and same genre if there's an author that they've read before they enjoy that's a pretty good shot they might enjoy something else by the author and I just want to make the point that finding a good it's not just the skill that people have they have to work on it after practice it it does take some time to do that but it can really pay some dividends a lot of times due to special coming from elementary school the strategy at the library be something like window shopping by the way our libraries are amazing about making sure we have all kinds of cool displays and other things to interest them and show them some books that might be cool but getting beyond that to try and dive into stuff that they enjoyed before and how but that might lead them something that they might want to read in the future right making reading interesting so it's definitely sometimes harder for us to make reading something that are intermediate and Middle School didn't want to do so we really recommend kind of finding something they like and subscribing to it there's lots of stuff out there about football and video games and there's all sorts of different types of magazines that could appeal to your particular stew there's art magazines like the range is unlimited on what they can find for their interest so here's a few links but we will put on also on the district website for your student to subscribe to some magazines. They might be interested in additionally we really also recommend you reading with your child this really enables that modeled reading that helps them who helps you demonstrate what reading should sound like and it also need you to ask the comprehension questions that will in turn allow them to maybe when the reading by themselves also ask themselves their questions it kind of gets them that model of how what we should be looking for when we read and what we read or in the goal so yes if you could sit down for that vote at least 10 of those 20 minutes with your student to read to them it really does make a difference yeah I'm going to jump in here and talk more about and I know we have a soapbox and we always talk about this but we do that because it really is it really so important when you are reading with a child how the way to make it a little more attractive and the Disco Beyond I'm just enjoying the book with them so a lot of teachers are trained and in this method which is really possible typically this is done with the call Interactive read aloud and this is a real quick way to think about how to question a child about what they're reading some kind of times work away from lower to higher sales and if you are reading with a child or even if you want to talk to them about maybe something that they're reading at school or on the dinner table this is a great format to kind of think about that it doesn't have to be a ton of questions just kind of two or three about the acronym here is crowd and I'm going to walk there real quick so be the first thing is completing statements that invited on topic response and this is usually typically used to talk to Larry so if there was some interesting word about that you want to make this about you can have him do a filling okay take a part of our effort to recall anything that invites the student to have to remember things from the story and verbalize that so you might prompt something like what happened at this point and I can tell you more about to be called more about story alligators are moving into high order thinking skills so open-ended question that invite hypothesis prediction diesel I think so a good pot might be something like that what do you think will happen next I know it's when I read with my child or that's a great one I kind of like if we leave at the end and it's sort of set this up for that next reading session so we can always talk about whether or not there diction how it was true and how it wasn't wh questions are your who what when where why questions again high order thinking skills so you could ask questions such as why did this tear interact with another character in that way this is also is going to tell lead me into the next one where students are really going to start thinking about putting some of themselves into their interpretation of this last part is these are questions that the child to think about how the story relates to their life experience such as something like a hey how is it like the time you went to this or maybe it's some interaction between pictures about have you ever had a time in your life when you felt similar or something like that making a connection between what they're reading and their own life experience is a great way to start inviting and getting them to relate more to the characters and then I'm audio books thank you Grandma was awesome and we definitely encourage the use of audiobooks for a dyslexic students they do have their Learning Ally count and they also have access to Sora if you do not have that information please contact your Highland Park dyslexia therapist so that would be either me or Graham or Stacy show me we can get that information to you but audiobooks allow your student to not only take the pressure off them to decode and just reading in general but they can kind of just sit there and enjoy the book so it also gives them affluent model such as you reading to them for those 20 minutes listening to it also gives them affluent model of how something should be read so we also really do encourage you using these audiobook accounts are English teachers know to usually cook pick up book that is on the account if they don't have a will provide the audio so if you can't find the audio for a certain book please also reach out to us and I just want to plug real quick cuz you'll be talked about libraries are local libraries also have their own store accounts as well so that really expensive Library that's available with using that tool grandma okay so are some of the things we can be done I'm a fan of a person in their own room and what I mean by this is that a student has particular commonly misspelled words or if there may be struggling reading some of the content words have been introduced especially things like social studies work for science these can be a pretty chunky words it's really really simple to make you use one with a keyboard and add them to the wall students are these so many times if you have a trouble with the word that really bugs you with the spelling imagine that every single time you're in the room, see this word again we can provide support things here at school and they might have but they're not always going to be staring likely at that for every single. But they're certainly going to experience what they have on their wall all the time hbic digital resources do for those of you that did attend gear-up we provided this handout we went through with each of each student to access the digital resources that they do access to so they were trained in how to set up queretaro on their Chromebook and learning ally voice to text and read and write and all the great resources behalf for them here at school so I'm this is also going to be on our district website this task task card with tutorials on how to use each one but again they are all either  therapist on Cupid and we can help set up their Chromebooks don't remember if this was me or Stacy bombs going to go for it Stacy this is great even for adults and I definitely have to have a space that is clean and ready to go and I'm ready to sit down and work but it's really great for your student to have a designated space that they come home to and do homework at it really will start to train their brain that when I'm in the space I am in like go mode I am working and it most importantly it's probably the least destructible place for them to do this home so pick a place in your home with that they have not very many distractions and they have all their supplies that they need so they don't have to get up a million times and you like Mom and make sure they have everything they need to not space start doing your homework there and it will really help them with their studies bills later on okay so this is we have a link here and it's also on the web page but isn't suggested books for parents and students with dyslexia these are great book The dyslexia empowerment plan is really awesome if you haven't read it it just kind of goes through your child has dyslexia is that you can take the kind of literally Empower them through it so I really recommend this book of course we have a whole list but these are just the two that really pop out and then overcoming dyslexia by Sally shaywitz and I'm she's one of the lead researchers and dyslexia who discovered that it really does start in the brain she did MRI studies where she had students read and it would light up where the brain was working and for those of us that have dyslexia myself included it wouldn't light up in the places for those that do not have to do it really kind of goes through the science of Dyslexia and then also the strategies and everything else that you would need to know so I really recommend going through this list and reading some of these books they also have audiobooks open Audible and other places as well if you just want to listen yes I'm at Taco Bell. I'm a little taking myself as well and and one thing we talked about all the time it is motivating I can be very challenging sometimes there are a lot of things involved reading texts that are conventional books we all read the book sometimes end up for a lot of students who were in the video game there are a lot of video games that are essentially books we're reading text is 892 100% of what they do to go to do that I'm a big fan of some of these theories I've traveled just went through the ages myself and I know he enjoys quite a few I'll just tear up something I think or really suitable for this age that that are really really fun a lot of things don't even think about it because they're enjoying a story being told in a different way listings that like that it's just another way to get them doing some reading time screen time doesn't always have to compete with readings on the big message I'm trying to get across their yes and even something is turn the captions on on your teeth picture of your reading the words so that's also a fluid model of reading that our students can enjoy like Graham add screen time doesn't work have to take away from reading just to piggyback on that since we talked about encouraging reading time of course I would like to encourage riding time as well and this can be anything set a child enjoy journaling if they're going to make some art work and they're going to add some a little bit of a text with the artwork I think that's terrific just to keep him toward the texting mode for some kids who kind of like video games water waves are there at no cost for students that like interactive fiction or Choose Your Own Adventure style stories of Nick and make their own so I'll link up here on some of my favorite questline and you could even do this it's it's pretty fun a lot of students really really enjoy that and if spending a lot of time writing is not the most fun thing for them this might be something that they would enjoy enjoy. okay so we also included games family game night you can make it reading aspects in it as well old fashioned Scrabble or Boggle apples-to-apples those things Scholastic has a link right here for a literacy boosting game so if you already do a family game night everything into it it just makes it that much better Grandview everything else you'd like to say about that Noah that's great just about what about experience as a parent and a teacher there there's there's a balance that you have between being a parent and also the time being teachery and in trying to get things improve their literacy but there's a lot of things that you can do that are just playing stiff arm that really are bonding time putting parents and children and they don't have to be you don't have to feel really really into still really make an impact if you guys have a great time together and in the piggyback on one last thing you said again so things like simple as does your child see you taking time for reading and I don't just mean answering texts right take some time out of your day to block and soften and make sure that they're seeing that and again it's a great thing to do together that really is a great bonding experience that can be really really powerful imagine if you know how many words for some of these games that you make over and over again it really does that up okay and then we just were to leave our contact information here I'm so Graham mr.
