School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)

Texas Education Code 28.004(a) and HPISD Board Policy BDF (LEGAL) and EHAA (LEGAL) require that the school board establish a local school health advisory council (SHAC) to assist the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the district’s health education instruction.  The SHAC’s duties include recommending a coordinated health program including health education, physical education, nutrition services, parental involvement, substance abuse prevention, school health services, school counseling, healthy school environment, and employee wellness.  In addition, the SHAC shall recommend district health education requirements, appropriate grade levels and methods of instruction for human sexuality instruction, appropriate grade levels and curriculum for instruction on opioid addition, and appropriate grade levels and curriculum for instruction on child abuse and violence prevention.
