A virtual meeting was held Oct. 26, 2021 for Highland Park High School parents of students with dyslexia. The meeting was recorded as a resource for parents.

okay I'm going to start over again my name is Sarah Reynolds and I am the dyslexia specialist at the high school I'm just is my second year at the dyslexia specialist and I've been at the high school for three years I'm going to share my present Mission with you guys there's my contact information I'm and I'm on the Highland Park High School website if anybody needs to eat tell me or has any questions after the meeting I'm business similar to a presentation that I did for the decoding dyslexia group last year but there's some changes to it also I just really quickly wanted to talk about what just Lexia support looks at looks like at the high school we have me who is the dyslexia specialist and I'm also the 504 coordinator for all students identified with dyslexia I also go to the art meeting for the students with dyslexia I do things like student check-in I'm I do the progress monitoring which consists of collecting data on grade Burns bro aquaponics Greener and then I also look at their state assessment scores PSAT scores all those good things I also teach to take flight classes that we have a first-year class and II your class this for which I'm very excited about to be offering and I send the kid periodic newsletters one of the things that I wanted to talk to you guys about her things that parents can do at home to support their stewed chance to stay on top of their school work high school can be a hard place for a lot of kids I'm in some kids have been able to manage things really well and they get to high school and it gets just a lot harder to some of the things that I suggest the students and I suggested the parents also it's a develop a routine for doing homework I'm come up with a system for keeping track of their assignment and there's so much available to the kids they're all connected to their phone so I often suggest they start utilizing their calendar and stuff on their phone because it will remind them when they have things do some kids do better writing things down we still sell itself. Schedulers down in the supply room that's also a great thing for kids to use put your phone away so you don't get distracted when you're doing your homework I'm plan outline the task before you're going to start also I tell kids don't wait till the last minute you need to break bigger projects up into smaller or less intimidating pieces a lot of kids will come to me and say sort of like they're overwhelmed by a paper or overwhelmed to get started on something but if they break it into smaller pieces it can sometimes go much smoother I'm give yourself enough time to work slowly and carefully and prioritize do what to do first and don't fall into the no homework tonight trap I tell all the kids that I check I'm with you even if you think you don't have homework and a certain class you do and you can still study something and dedicate a certain amount of time for example like Latin you should be dedicating at least 15 minutes every night setting the have you learned even if you think you don't have anything else to do the other thing that I just wanted to talk to the parents about is to teach your students to feel comfortable advocating for their needs make sure your kids know what their accommodations are if they don't have a sheet with their accommodations on it it looks like this and it came to you and their 504 plan or their art paperwork they can come by and I can print that out for them or their mom during teacher can also print that out for them and I even have a pocket like protect page protectors for them to put it in so they can carry it around with them because at high school kids should be very aware of what their accommodations are I'm they should also be advocating for themselves and I love this Graphics self-advocacy is the ability to articulate one's needs and make informed decisions about the support necessary to meet those needs as your kids get into high school they become more aware of what they need and they should be becoming more aware of what they need and managing themselves in school I also this is what Nancy Johnson was talking about time this is posted on the dyslexia website and its links with tutorial to all this technology that's available to our student there's math technology if your student has trouble lining up math problems which is a big thing in High School there's a lot of oral Administration help in all of these things are available to every student and so I really encourage you to take a look at this I also sent this to all the students at the beginning of the year and as I've met with you start using some of this the next thing I wanted to talk about is if your student has issues with instructional accommodations I'm always talk to the teacher first and encourage your students to talk to the teacher first I'm oftentimes problems can be resolved by just making the teacher aware of the issue I'm if your student feels uncomfortable and you feel like you need to step in can always email the teacher but really the first line of communication needs to be student to teacher at the high school level I'm at the high school level students should first try to resolve issues on their I'm some ways to approach teachers stay after class or come to tutorial to talk to the teacher and I am sorry guys I'm going to make my I'm going to admit somebody else sorry I'm put teachers but anyway if they could stay after class go to tutorials is usually a great time to talk to the teacher I tell a lot of students don't go to the Des Bois for the chest and think you're going to talk to your teacher because there's going to be 50 students there but if you go on maybe the day after the test and meet your teacher for tutorials you'll have a chance to visit with them and that oftentimes helps turn it back to a romantic gesture like was talking about the emotional components of it sometimes teachers become less intimidating the better we know them and then send you can also if you don't have time or haven't found a way to talk to the animal play email and I'm always happy to help kids compose email to their teachers and if that doesn't work I meet with your 504 coordinator I'm just Lexia specialist for monitoring teacher and and see if they can help the councillors another person at the high school level with baking meet with that can help them communicate with the teachers if there's a problem the other thing that I just wanted to touch on is that if you are student feels like I need a change in accommodation you can request a 504 meeting at any time your student can come I have students that come and request them to me which I like very much and then I just let me know why are you want the meeting I'm so that I can collect the right data from the teachers and then accommodations can only be added or changed if there's documented educational needs and the teachers in the Bible for committee all agree so it's not just a plus I feel like I need extra time because it took me know I wasn't able to finish the last question on my chest it needs to be an educational need and we need to have some documentation that shows that the navigational name the other thing that I want to test on it we get lots of questions about and are sophomores and juniors just took the PSAT I'm the PSAT and the SAT and all the 80 exams are done by the College Board the accommodations for those are separate from your 504 accommodations and you're our paperwork and let me let I think somebody else it was me sir I just put it in just wanted to talk to you if you have a student his special ed and there's an account request for an accommodation change so Sarah talked about if your students are at 350 for how to handle that if they if your students there's a special education there on an IP then they would be the art committee that would need to consider Ames and you would contact the special education coordinator to set up in our committee meeting so that our committee could review the request for the change that was a similar process that just slightly different contacts I just want to make sure that was clear and yes thank you so much for saying that and then for testing accommodations and like I said the PSAT the sophomores and juniors just took a couple weeks ago that governed by the college board that also include any AP classes that they'll take in the future or any of the SAT and they have to apply for those accommodations separately I know if they're bad the ennard being it will be discussing going to be in you'll be sent information on how to apply for those accommodations in the email is testing hphs at HP isd.org Manor at the high school is our testing for a nater and she will help you apply for those accommodations college board and act again are separate from your 504 accommodations I'm in a lot of people especially that haven't taken those tests yet think that they're 504 accommodations cover the PSAT but it doesn't it separate I'm in you apply for those and then they will send you a letter telling you what they approve and like I said men Milwaukee through the whole process of how did you do that the first time they take the PSAT is in 10th Grade I'm it is up to you and your student what do you want to apply for accommodations for their 10th grade I know if they do you should probably apply for those accommodations the spring before the test but I'd also know that the counselors recommend that 10th graders kind of just take the test cold because it doesn't really or anything in 10th Grade and then apply for those accommodations in 11th grade but again that's up to each individual family how they want to handle that I'm the ACT is a little bit different and you don't typically take your act until the spring of your junior year and you cannot apply for those accommodations until you're actually registered for a chest I'm in again miss Tanner at the high school will help you through that whole process and just I know that there are deadline for when you can apply for certain tasks and it's taking about six to eight weeks to get those letters back with the approved accommodation and on that
