Epperson comes to HPISD from Irving ISD where he has been the head orchestra director at Irving High School since 2013. He also served as the head orchestra director at Bowie Middle School in Irving ISD from 2008-2013. Epperson holds a Master of Music degree from Southern Methodist University and a Bachelor of Music from the University of North Texas.

"Matthew Epperson brings a wealth of experience to the Highland Park Orchestra program." HPHS Principal Jeremy Gilbert said. "During his time as a head orchestra director of a large high school, Mr. Epperson has proven himself to be a skilled director, a student-centered teacher, and an excellent collaborator with parents, colleagues as well as with his students. I am thrilled to welcome Mr. Epperson as our new Orchestra Director as I am confident he will continue the tradition of excellence associated with this program."

Along with being an experienced teacher, Epperson also has a wide range of performance experience. An accomplished cellist, he has played with the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra, the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving as well as with the Meadows Symphony Orchestra. He has also appeared with popular artists such as Josh Groban, The Eagles, Trans Siberian Orchestra, and Disturbed. When not in school, Mr. Epperson is passionate about learning exciting new repertoire on the cello and staying musically inspired to teach others.
