HPHS Academic Decathlon Team wins regionals

HP came away with the Region X Academic Decathlon title after several days of competition in January. The essay, speech, and interview competitions were held virtually through Zoom meetings, and the objective tests and Super Quiz were held at John Paul II High School in Plano with students required to wear masks, maintain social distance, and remain in designated areas with their teams throughout the day.
 
The awards ceremony was held virtually, and HP proved to be the dominant team in the region, winning first place overall as a team. Individual students also took top awards:
 
In the Varsity Division:
  • Mackenna Bierschenk finished first overall, 
  • Jack Jiang finished third
  • Jasper Chen finished fourth
In the Scholastic Division, Highland Park swept the top awards:
  • Matthew Winters placed first overall 
  • Karina Zaydler placed second
  • Pike Dzurny placed third 
 
HP also swept the Honors division:
  • Daniel Carrillo placed first overall 
  • Ryan Carmack placed second
  • Kai Tsuei placed third 
The HP team also won the Super Quiz competition. Later this month, the team will compete to defend the state championship they won last year.
