5 students named All-State musicians

HPHS All-State Band Members
Junior Saif Saleh (French horn), senior Zack Shawver (percussion) and freshman Vincenzo Guandolo (bassoon) will perform in February at the annual Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention. This marks Shawver's second time to state. "We are so very proud of the hard work and discipline of these talented students, as well as our entire music and fine arts program," HPHS Band Director Reagan Brumley said.

More than 1,700 students are selected through a process that begins with approximately 60,000 students across Texas vying for the honor to perform in one of 15 band, orchestra and choir ensembles. The audition process starts in the summer with four separate auditions during the fall to reach All-State status. During the audition, individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each performance.

HPHS All-State Choir Members
Junior Alexander Miller (Bass 1) and senior Karen Shirley (Soprano 2) have been named to the All-State Choir. "Placement in an All-State Choir is the highest individual honor a choral student can receive," HPHS Choir Director Natalie Walker said. "These students have been preparing for this moment since last summer while attending camps in June and July."

In mid-February, All-State students will participate in four days of rehearsals directed by nationally recognized conductors during the annual TMEA convention. Their performances before thousands of attendees will close the convention on Saturday, February 15 at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center.
