Nine members of the HPHS Academic Decathlon team flew to Tucson to participate in the Canyon del Oro High School Invitational Meet Dec. 2-4. For most of the team, this was their first time competing in all ten events of decathlon, where they finished second out of twelve teams.
Throughout the weekend AcDec coached David Alvarado and Scott Fortier were able to provide invaluable guidance and travel logistics. The competing captains were Elizabeth Chen, Catherine Lu and Yincheng Qian, who helped get the team into academic shape. Captain Justine Choi was busy representing HPHS in the Region 20 Orchestra Competition (violin).
Captain Elizabeth Chen earned a perfect score in the Honors Art category. Jeneta Nwosu, Captain Catherine Lu and Vaughan Mullikin went 1-2-3 in that same category in the Scholastic Division. The Honors team of Captain Elizabeth Chen, Captain Yincheng Qian and Olivia Xiao also swept the Interview, Literature and Social Sciences categories. Individual overall winners were:
- Honors (A): Captain Yincheng Qian (2nd)
- Scholastic (B): Jeneta Nwosu (2nd)
- Varsity (C): Sean Ashton (3rd)
