Trustees sworn in for three-year terms; Jae Ellis takes office

Jae Ellis, Edward Herring and Kelly Walker took the oath of office May 21 to serve three-year terms on the Highland Park ISD Board of Trustees. 

Ellis was elected May 4 to serve in Place 4 following the retirement of Paul Rowsey, who served on the board for nine years. Herring and Walker ran unopposed for places 5 and 3, respectively, in the election.

Ellis is an attorney and currently serves as a director for the litigation consulting and litigation support firm of Courtroom Sciences, Inc. He is married to Liza Graham Ellis and is the father of HPHS senior Caroline and HPMS eighth-grader Judge. He attended Bradfield Elementary, McCulloch Middle School and is a 1990 graduate of Highland Park High School, where he was also a classroom teacher and coach. 

"I am very thankful for the opportunity to serve our community as a school board trustee," Ellis said. "I am eager to begin working with the other trustees and district administration to continue Highland Park's tradition of academic excellence while constantly searching for ways to improve our district."

Following the swearing-in ceremony, the board unanimously re-elected Jim Hitzelberger to serve as Board President. The full list of officers include:
  • President - Jim Hitzelberger
  • Vice President - Kelly Walker
  • Secretary - Lee Michaels
  • Finance Officer - Edward Herring
  • Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Delegate - Jae Ellis
  • TASB Alternate - Jim Hitzelberger
"It is a privilege to serve the HPISD community, and it is an honor to work together with our PTAs, Dads Clubs, parent committees and District administration," Hitzelberger said. "I am looking forward to the 2019-20 school year, operating alongside this incredible Board of caring individuals who continually put the needs of our students first."

Rowsey will be recognized for his service during at June 11 meeting, which will be held in the cafeteria at University Park Elementary School.
