Substitutes play an important role in supporting the daily success of HPISD students and campuses. We are proud to partner with dedicated substitute teachers who provide continuity, flexibility, and high-quality support in the classroom while helping maintain a positive learning environment across the district. Requirements

A minimum of 48 college credit hours.
Preference is given to applicants that hold a valid Texas teaching certification.
An official copy of College Transcript (please do not upload with application)
References on application – Please include at least 3 professional references with accurate e-mail addresses

Application Process

Step 4: Fingerprinting

All substitutes are required to be fingerprinted by Texas state law in order to be allowed to work in a public school. The cost for the fingerprinting is just under $50. The district will not reimburse applicants for fingerprinting expenses. Previous fingerprinting that you may have completed for a real estate license, nursing license or daycare will not be accepted by the state. If you have been fingerprinted recently under Senate Bill 9, we may be able to acquire the results quickly.
Once Public School Works and Fingerprinting have been completed and verified by our office you will be sent the new hire onboarding documents electronically.

What are the work hours?

Substitutes are to report to the campus at least 30 minutes prior to the school start time. You should arrive no later than 7:30am for elementary campuses. When reporting for a substitute assignment, all substitutes are required to sign in at the front office. Teacher dismissal is at 4:00 p.m. End-of-Day time may be earlier with the permission of the principal.

What happens if I'm selected to become a substitute teacher?

Once your background is cleared and your application is reviewed and verified to be complete, you will receive an email with instructions on next steps and links to complete your New Hire Packet. When you complete your packet you will be receive an invitation to attend the next upcoming orientation, which is required for all new substitute teachers to the district; you will need to RSVP to reserve your seat.
