Meet Piper & Lassie
In Highland Park ISD, support comes in many forms. Sometimes it comes from a caring teacher. Sometimes it comes from a trusted friend. And sometimes, it arrives with four paws and a wagging tail.
Piper and Lassie are HPISD's therapy dogs, providing comfort, connection, and support to students, staff, and families across the district. Since joining the HPISD family, they have become beloved members of our schools, bringing smiles wherever they go.
HPISD is grateful to the many partners who helped make this program possible. Special thanks to the Highland Park Education Foundation, La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas, and Highland Park alumnus Dr. Geoff Bratton ('95) and the team at Holt Veterinary, whose ongoing care and support help keep Piper and Lassie healthy and happy.
How Piper & Lassie Joined HPISD
The idea for therapy dogs in Highland Park ISD began when district leaders and the Highland Park Education Foundation recognized an opportunity to expand emotional support resources for students. Together, they envisioned a program that would provide comfort in a way that felt welcoming, approachable, and calming.
The Highland Park Education Foundation presented the opportunity to partner with La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas, a longtime supporter of HPISD. Through their generosity, the district was able to welcome not just one therapy dog, but two.
Piper and Lassie, both Bernedoodles, were selected for their gentle temperament and hypoallergenic qualities. They completed professional training to prepare for their important role and now serve as a source of encouragement, reassurance, and connection throughout the district.
Their Important Work
Piper and Lassie work alongside their handlers, Chief Mark Rowden and School Resource Officer Michael Bridgewater. Together, they visit campuses, attend events, support students during challenging moments, and help create positive connections across the HPISD community.
Whether greeting students in the morning, attending special events, visiting classrooms, or offering comfort during difficult situations, Piper and Lassie help make HPISD a more welcoming and supportive place for everyone.
