Social Studies

In Highland Park ISD, social studies prepares students to be informed, engaged, and responsible citizens. Through high-quality, research-based instruction, every learner develops critical thinking, historical understanding, geographic awareness, and civic literacy from Kindergarten through 12th grade, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and democratic dispositions to go forth and serve.

Our curriculum is grounded in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and ensures rigorous, consistent instruction in history, government, geography, economics, and culture across every campus — enriched by primary and secondary sources including founding documents, speeches, biographies, political cartoons, and maps.

In Kindergarten through Grade 4, social studies is intentionally woven into English Language Arts, deepening learning through content-rich literacy experiences. Students build historical knowledge while simultaneously strengthening reading, writing, speaking, and listening — creating a strong foundation in both disciplines.

Across all grade levels, explicit instruction through the gradual release model moves students from guided understanding to independent application. Civil discourse, Document-Based Questions, and purposeful questioning are hallmarks of HPISD social studies — challenging every student to think like a historian, evaluate evidence, consider multiple perspectives, and construct well-reasoned arguments. These are the habits of democratic citizenship we are committed to developing in every HP Scot.
