Mathematics

HPISD mathematics is TEKS-aligned and rooted in the science of learning, delivering rigorous, consistent instruction across every campus and classroom. Our Mathematics Framework, grounded in research-based instructional practices and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' guiding principles, ensures that every learner has access to a high-quality mathematics education.

Every HPISD math classroom is built on explicit, intentional instruction. Teachers use the gradual release model to move students from guided understanding to independent application. Lessons are anchored by clear learning objectives, precise academic vocabulary, carefully planned examples that connect to real-world, authentic problem solving, and multiple opportunities for purposeful practice.

Students are expected to develop basic fact fluency, procedural fluency, and deep conceptual understanding, moving purposefully through concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations.  Students build a true understanding of why the math works. 

Students are expected to communicate their mathematical thinking, explore multiple solution strategies, and engage in meaningful discourse with teachers and peers. Instruction includes effective questioning strategies to ensure that students do the thinking, not just receive information.

In Highland Park ISD, mathematics is not simply a subject; it is a discipline that develops critical thinkers, confident problem solvers, and lifelong learners who are prepared to go forth and serve.
