HPISD Writing Process

The Grade Level Writing Plans include grade level goals to ensure that your child will complete at least one writing per nine-weeks using the HPISD Writing Process. Additional guidance will be provided by your child's teacher as the writing process begins.

For students to develop as writers, the writing process must be continuously applied. Students learn that writing can be both linear and cyclical, moving through the stages of planning, drafting, revising, editing, and sharing authentic work.

• Planning includes brainstorming, oral rehearsal, webbing, drawing, outlining, and using graphic organizers or mnemonics to organize ideas before writing.
• Drafting is when students use their plans to write a first attempt, focusing on building ideas, stamina, and volume without worrying about perfection.
• Revising encourages students to improve areas such as voice, clarity, organization, elaboration, word choice, leads, and conclusions through multiple versions and revisions.
• Editing focuses on refining writing through correct capitalization, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and word choice.
• Sharing gives students opportunities to present their writing to authentic audiences through celebrations, classroom showcases, community displays, and other meaningful experiences
