Highland Park Independent School District engages in high-quality, research-based literacy practices to develop strong reading, writing, and communication skills for all students. At HPISD, literacy instruction is a foundation of student success — one that empowers students to read, write, and communicate for authentic purposes and authentic audiences across all grade levels and content areas.

HPISD's English Language Arts & Reading curriculum is built on a robust literacy framework that develops confident readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators. Through a TEKS-aligned curriculum grounded in the Science of Teaching Reading, students engage in meaningful instruction that strengthens foundational skills, grammar, spelling, comprehension, vocabulary, writing, speaking, and critical thinking across all grade levels. Students in grades K-4 receive social studies instruction as a part of their ELAR block, connecting literacy skills to content-area learning in meaningful and purposeful ways 

From foundational skills in elementary school to advanced analysis, research, and composition in secondary classrooms, HPISD's literacy framework supports continuous growth and academic excellence. Our goal is for every student to leave HPISD prepared to communicate effectively, think critically, and thrive in college, career, and life.
