How does the Sick Leave Bank work?

The Highland Park Sick Leave Bank was established to provide sick leave days to members of the bank who are unable to work because of serious illness, temporary disability, or the terminal illness of a family member. Workdays are requested from the bank when the member has exhausted all of his/her accumulated paid state and local leave days.

Any employee of the district who is scheduled to work at least thirty hours per week in a budgeted position and earns at least three days of local leave during the school year is eligible to join the Sick Leave Bank. An annual fee of $1.00 per member is assessed to cover all costs related to administering the program.

Each applicant for membership in the Sick Leave Bank must contribute three days from his/her accrued local sick leave. Those days are subtracted from the employees local sick leave balance and become the property of the SLB. Members who do not use days from the bank during a school year are normally not required to donate additional days the next year to remain a member. A member who uses fewer than three days in a year must donate the number of days he/she actually used. A member may receive a maximum of thirty days from the SLB during any one school year.

The enrollment period for current employees is September 1 through 30 of each school year and is in effect from the first official workday of the new school year. New employees must apply for membership within thirty calendar days of employment, and their membership will not be effective until the first day of the month following sixty days of employment.

Requirements and instructions for the Employee Sick Leave Bank are included in the HPISD Employee Handbook and can also be found in the Benefits section of the Personnel Department's web pages.
