About the Program
The Highland Park ISD Communications internship is a fall semester program. The intern will work with the Communications Department staff to assist with writing projects, web postings, HP-TV cable access station programming, media relations and other departmental functions.
The intern will gain experience in communication strategy, public relations tactics, design, and membership marketing. The intern will also have the opportunity to build a professional portfolio by having his or her writing and photographs published on the web and in local media. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience and contribute fresh ideas to a dynamic public relations department.
Job Specifics
This is a paid 25-hour-per-week internship. Pay is $250 per week.
About HPISD and the Communications Department
The Highland Park ISD is one of the top school districts in the country. Founded in 1914, the district has a long-standing reputation of excellence in academics, athletics and extracurricular studies. All seven of its campuses are rated “Exemplary” by the Texas Education Agency, the highest possible rating. Approximately 97% of each year’s graduates enroll in colleges and universities; therefore college preparation is the driving goal for its instructional program.
Overview of the Department
It is the mission of the HPISD Communications Department to act as an effective liaison between the community and the school district. The department is well-known for its innovative work and its commitment to keeping employees, community members and media well-informed. Weekly e-newsletters and frequent press releases include everything from student achievement and human interest stories to policy updates, with plenty of photos to tell the stories.
The award-winning HPISD website is maintained by the Communications Department. In addition, the department manages HPTV, which broadcasts student programs, district news and sports replays on the local cable access channel.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Communications Director in handling media inquiries, researching and drafting responses and organizing interviews.
- Photograph campus events and write brief descriptive press releases.
- Assist the Communications Specialist in compiling, editing and proofing the weekly e-newsletter.
- Assist the Web Services Coordinator in posting press releases and weekly e-newsletter.
- Assist the Communications Specialist in preparing weekly press clipping packets for School Board members.
- Special events planning and preparation.

Necessary Skills
The ideal intern will be a college student pursuing a degree in journalism, marketing, communications or public relations at a college or university, or a recent college graduate interested in gaining professional experience.
Ability to multitask and work under deadline is essential, and professional conduct is expected at all times.
- Writing, editing, proof-reading and research skills are essential.
- Initiative, positive attitude and strong work ethic are a must.
- Ability to express ideas and opinions clearly and concisely.
- Computer skills (Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark Express or In Design) are required.
- Video production and editing experience are a plus.

Materials and application should be postmarked no later than Friday, May 9, 2008. Finalists will be contacted for interviews in late May and should be available to start work in mid-August.
